Justin Bieber Fans are Smarter than Twitter

Twitter is getting in Beliebers’ nerves.

Twitter recently changed the way it calibrates its trending topics to emphasize items that are suddenly the most talked about rather than the most popular items. Justin Bieber was a mainstay on the Twitter trends until this change; now, he has disappeared completely.

Bieber’s fans are working to outsmart the new system by pushing new Bieber topics, such as #letbiebertrend and BIEBER TREND. By leaving out the word “Justin,” Twitter thinks a new topic has come up completely unrelated to Justin Bieber.

Bieber responded to the Twitter uproar Sunday, tweeting: “and yes i see what all u fans are doing. like i tell everyone. i have the best most loyal smartest and dedicated fans in the world. i love u.”

Bieber fans are apparently determined to outsmart Twitter’s new trending system.

If Twitter’s intention with the new trending topics algorithm was to keep this kind of coordinated fan-jacking from working, then it looks like they’re going to have to tweak the formula further.
