Lorde: ‘Justin Bieber Isn’t Real Depiction of Young People’ + Dissing Taylor & Selena

Lorde might have the biggest song in the world right now with Royals, but it seems people are more interested in the comments she’s made about other artists.

The 16 year-old Kiwi singer hasn’t been afraid to say what she really thinks about Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez – and she totally stands by her statements.

Lorde told MTV News:

I think there’s a funny culture in music that’s only happened over the last 15 years, that if you have an opinion about something in music that isn’t 100-percent good, you’re a ‘hater,’ even if you have perfectly reasonable grounds for that critique. People will say exactly what they think about a movie or a TV show, and that’s fine, but as soon as you say it about a record, you’re like some little zombie in a funny dungeon.

I have pretty strong morals and opinions being in pop music, and I can’t help but express those, which I think people appreciate. I mean, I don’t think I say anything that isn’t backed up. Most of the time I will stand by things that I’ve said.

So what exactly has Lorde said about the trio?

On Justin Bieber: I feel like the influences that are there in the industry for people my age, like Justin Bieber or whatever, are just maybe not a very real depiction of what it’s like to be a young person.

On Selena Gomez: I’m a feminist, and the theme of her song is, ‘When you’re ready come and get it from me.’ I’m sick of women being portrayed this way.

On Taylor Swift: I wish my favorite stars didn’t look perfect because i think fans have these feelings of worthlessness, like they’ll never be as pretty/talented/whatever, as a result of this intense photoshop culture and the endless strive for perfection. Taylor Swift was the first person i thought of, which I regret. she happens to be good looking, but i think she actually uses her other imperfections in an incredibly powerful and relatable way.

Joe Jonas defends Taylor & Selena:
Joe took to Twitter to kind of (sort of diss) Lorde, writing, “Hey @lordemusic you say call me Queen B but you shouldn’t be attacking all the true Queen B-tches’s #respect.”

Do you think Lorde should apologize to Justin, Taylor & Selena?

  1. I could care less about Selene and Taylor, she needs to back off of Justin. Your opinions reflex’s who you are. i don’t know anything about this girl at all, and i really don’t plan to. and if your a hater your a hater i don’t care.

    • Lorde sounds like the type of person that think she’s always the victim and has it worst of all but if she did research she could se justin and selena didn’t come from the brightest of backgrounds either and sorry don’t no anything about Taylor but I think she complimented her for talking about all the drama in her life.

      • As much as I love Taylor, Selena, and of course Justin, Lorde is 100% correct in what she says here. The theme in “Come and Get It” is exactly what she describes. Taylor and many other stars are constantly being shown to be flawless with natural beauty as well as how they don’t make many mistakes which isn’t true. As for Justin, he’s living a life that no else can imagine. He’s rich, famous, attractive, and can do almost anything he wants within reason and law. Most young people today are working or studying in school/college so that they can have a career in the future. That’s not to say that Justin doesn’t work very hard to do what he’s doing, but the media only posts his mistakes and “bad boy antics” which is what the rest of the world will see if they aren’t big fans already. I don’t really blame the artists for this, but rather the music industry, the media, and the paparazzi.

    • i totally agree.it’s not, stay the fu-k ou of his buisness and shut up you know what i mean?i mean her musc is okay but still though.

  2. I Agree with her on selena, the theme is sort of sexist, but not about justin and Taylor. Taylor Swift seems flawless, so what? That just means she is beautiful and talented. Why is that an insult? And how does justin not represent young people?? He acts like a kid, goofs off, plays sports and video games, goes on twitter and instagram, hangs out with his family and friends. He sets a great example for young people to strive for what they believe in. He’s extremely hard working and he’s talented. I think this gurl needs to shut up and focus on her music, like justin and taylor

  3. Lorde whatever they call u, plz stay out of Justin, mind ur own business first. As for selena and taylor I could cares less, for them, u can diss them as much as u like but not justin.. Okkk

  4. yes! she should apologize to justin, taylor, and selena! i know that justin gets dissed on a lot by a lot of different people but why does lorde have to diss on taylor and selena!? i think lorde is jealous that justin’s song heartbreaker is number 1 and her song royals is number 2 or 3 or whatever! i don’t know why she dissed on taylor and selena. I love selena gomez! she is my other idol! i love her songs and i love her albums. She’s pretty, an amazing singer, and i’m a selenator because of her. I also love taylor swift. I love her songs and i love her albums. I would love to see both selena and taylor in concert one day. But anyways, i hate it when justin gets dissed on! that makes me mad! i can’t believe lorde is dissing on justin, selena, and taylor! that is so cruel!

    • She has no reason to apologize to anyone. She’s expressing her opinion and there’s nothing wrong with it. I love Justin but the life he lives is not the life that the majority of people his age are living. He is talented and works very hard for what he has, but it isn’t realistic for every young person to want to live the way he lives. We all would to love to be rich and famous but that’s not how the world works. We live in a celebrity obsessed culture which is why she said what she said. As for Lorde being jealous of Justin, definitely not. Royals is #1 in the U.S. and it’s her debut single. Justin doesn’t have a #1 song in the U.S. yet and he’s been around for much longer. I do hope Heartbreaker gets #1 because he works his butt off and really deserves it. All I’m saying is that she makes a valid point.

      • Ya on consumerism and materialism….but Justin, Selena, or Taylor have never encouraged or implied their life is ‘Normal’ and that teens should aspire to have what they have…Just because they work in Hollywood and make Millions does not mean they want or think people look to at that as what they want to be known for JUST LIKE OHHH LORDE>>> LOL they want to be liked and known for their TALENT….not their $$$$$$$$$.

      • @Justice Drew Beebs Lover… It doesn’t matter if they never said they want people to aspire to be like them. Every public figure whether it be an actor, singer, politician, athlete, etc., knows that people look up to them. Celebrities can have a huge influence on their fans, especially the younger ones, which is why so many people give them crap when they make mistakes and it’s publicized by media. The biggest problem is that a lot of artists start out hiding their true colors when they are young by pretending like they are someone they aren’t, but when they get older they eventually get tired of the restrictions. You will rarely see anything that involves swearing, weed, alcohol, sex, etc. surrounding a young artist because the music industry wants people to think the artist is flawless, when they aren’t. When they finally make a mistake such as getting caught smoking weed, the world bashes them when in reality, A LOT of young people smoke weed. You don’t see many people hating on Rihanna for photos of her smoking weed getting out to the public. Why? Because she made her transition years ago from that flawless, good girl act that her label forced on her for the first two years. Now no one really cares if she smokes weed. Did she lose any young fans because of this? Not likely because those same fans are growing up with her. Many musicians tone down their performances and shows because it means more money. All young kids will need an adult to take them to a show which means ticket sales will skyrocket. Justin, Selena, and Taylor are all adults, but are constantly portrayed as kids because they have a lot more fans that are under 18 than artists like Rihanna. In the long run, this will only hurt their reputation. Sure they will sell singles and records, but most of their money is from merchandise, endorsements, and sponsorships. Touring is where they make their money from music. But in 10-15 years from now they will be in their 30s and younger fans won’t be that interested because they will think they are “old.” A lot of older fans will lose interest and they won’t get many new fans that are older than them. In reality Justin, Taylor, Selena, and every other artist are far from perfect just like everyone else, but their management will almost always deny any wrongdoing to protect the artist’s reputation. I’m not saying that they need to announce every time they smoke a blunt or publicize they just got laid. Obviously, doing this too much will result in negative feedback. But when they are forced to pretend that it doesn’t exist, they are lying to themselves and to their fans who think they aren’t engaging in that kind of activity. This will only lead to them becoming irrelevant ten years down the line. Why do you think Miley Cyrus is trying to break away from Hannah Montana? Selena did the same thing with her movie Spring Breakers, but hasn’t really transitioned yet. Also, I’m aware that they want to be known for their talent, but let’s be honest. How many “beliebers” like Justin for the sole fact that his music is amazing. I’m sure there are some, but more like him for his looks and music. Honestly, if he was overweight or just born ugly, I’d like to see how many beliebers would obsess over him as much as they do. Most of the comments on this website are about how cute he is, how much they love him and his sexy abs, or how much they hate Selena Gomez (which is either because they are jealous she dated him or because she broke up with him).

    • maybe lorde is trying to use Justin to further her own career. a shabby thing to say in any case. when she grows up she may see the error of her ways

    • If you read the article she didnt exactly diss Justin, she simply said he’s not the depiction of young people in todays society, with selena Lorde just stated the fact shes feminine and doesn’t really fancy songs where women are made to look so, in regards to Taylor she referred to her beauty and how with some celebs their immensely photoshopped images could harm other people in making them believe their not beautiful. I’m not trying to hate on what you said just trying to open your perspective on the matter

  5. Yes I agree with you averie they should apologize because she did diss justin and I am kind of mad she dissed selena and justin because I love them both and they are both great musicians who I will never leave

  6. I found Lourde’s “critique” of Selena’s COME AND GET IT song without merit and crudely put. She takes herself way too seriously and condemns what is really a love song between two beautiful people whose romance still may exist, if (for the moment) only etherially. Selena Gomez isn’t an anti-feminist, so much as she is a true romantic! Her work with UNICEF, helping helpless children, and her desire to never disparage others along the way, makes her an admirable role model to youth….

    • I love you belieber!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you for being my sister. I will always love you forever beautiful

    • Technically she’s not dissing Justin, just sayin he isn’t a depiction of how young people today live. It’s as simple as that. In my opinion that’s not dissing, that’s just stating the obvious. An example of an insult to Justin Bieber would probably be something like ‘he’s only famous cos of his looks’. I’d consider that an insult rather than what Lorde stated.

  7. thats not even what come and get it is about… shes really ignorant for saying that. She’s only sixteen years old, she takes herself WAY too seriously. Selena Gomez said her whole album stars dance is supposed to exude confidence for women so lorde needs to think and do research before she acts like that. Every song Selena has ever written that’s so inspirational and beautiful and all she can think of is Come and Get it? That proves she knows nothing about Selena. Plus Come and Get It is about how her relationship is over but she loves him so much that if he came back she’d be their with open arms. Its a romance song not a freaking anti feminist song. She needs to apologize.

  8. So what Taylor swift looks too flawless in every picture she takes. That honestly inspires us with fashion. People look up to her. So what people sing about sex. Were are human mind you. And LMAOOO SHE BETTER BACK THE FUCK UP WITH JUSTIN BIEBER BECAUSE NOW SHES LOOKING FOR TROUBLE! She should already know the deal. Once you start stating negatives about Justin, beliebers automatically don’t like you. If she doesn’t want trouble she should’ve just kept her opinions to herself.

  9. i dont like that girl at all -.- but she has no right dissing them like that .especially justin or selena bcuzz they are both my rolemodels.she just needs to stfu bcuzz people have opinions about her to so yea she should apoligize.its not right for a celebrity to pick on another celebrity

  10. I find little in her to like; she is talented but her personality is a turn off. She seems too self righteous and arrogant. Sorry, She is probably making a lot of enemies already.

  11. I don’t think she thought of wat she said I mean she’s only lik 15 or 16…..I think she said things nd didn’t come out right

  12. I’m vry mad at that arrogant, jealous lorde! She shud’nt have dis Justin like that.N I think she shud apologize to justin, selena n taylor!

  13. Well miss lorde, this pple r beautiful inside and out, and they r young, part of growing up is to make mistakes and learn from them, as for taylor i think she there for her friend so I think u must sux it up and build yo carrier not enermis, Apologiz pliz

  14. okay, she’s really setting NZ a bad example. i’m from NZ, i love lorde, only her music but it’s hard to like someone from your country and someone she’s attacking. :(

  15. Lorde is much better than Taylor n’ Selena. And lord is only 16. Her song became #1 that was before Justin sing #hrartbraker came out. Now Justin song is #1. I luv you Justin and Lorde.:P

  16. hey hey hey shut the hell wht the hell tht bitch wants and yes she should apologize to them all she sucks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  17. shes just mad because she didn’t make #1 on the i tunes list HAHA and i like how Joe went off on her i respect that

  18. SHE SHOULD APOLOGIZE TO JUSTIN, SELENA AND TAYLOR!! I DON’T LIKE HER! SHE’S ONLY 16 BUT SHE ACTS LIKE SHE’S OLDER THAN OF THEM ALL! SHE’S SUCKS!!

  19. I love lordes and JB. So where in this interview did she diss anyone but Selena. All she said about Justin was that he isn’t the only depiction of young people. WHICH IS TRUE! And all she said about Taylor is that she is really pretty and that can make people feel “worthless” but she said that she uses her “imperfections” to be relatable. Can everyone just chill out and use your common sense?? I know we love Justin but we can’t act like idiots defending him when he’s not being attacked!

  20. SHE SOUNDS LIKE SHES A BIT JEALOUS OF THEIR BANK ACCOUNTS…SHES RIGHT MOST TEENS ARENT FILTHLY RICH LIKE THOSE THREE…THEY CANNOT HELP THAT THEY ARE EXTREMELY TALENTED AND MAKE TONS OF MONEY. SHE SHOULD BE HAPPY HER HIT IS WELL RECIEVED AND THAT SHE IS TALENTED AND HAD THE ABILITY TO RECORD ..THE BEAT IS GOOD…BUT WHEN I HEAR IT ON THE RADIO I DONT LISTEN TO IT…I TURN IT…IT BORES ME….I HAVENT HEARD ANY OF HER OTHER STUFF SO HOPEFULLY SHES NOT A ONE HIT WONDER!!! I WONDER IF SHE WRITES, PLAYS INSTRUMENTS, AND IS A HUMANITARIAN…SHE KINDA IS ON A HIGH HORSE AND A BIT SELF RIGHTEOUS.. :/
